Collaboration for Empowerment: FTP UNUD Community Service Team Drives Sari Mina Segara Toward Becoming a Competitive, Industry-Standard MSME
Buleleng, October 18, 2025 – The empowerment of coastal MSMEs has once again captured the attention of academia. A community service team from Udayana University (UNUD) visited Sangsit Village, Sawan District, Buleleng Regency, to accelerate the transformation of the Sari Mina Segara Group, a local fish-processing enterprise, in their journey to “level up” through the implementation of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), enhanced business management, and digital marketing transformation.
The program, titled “Creating Excellent Products and Resilient Businesses for the Sari Mina Segara Group through GMP Training, Business Management, and Product Marketing Towards Upgraded MSMEs,” was led by Ir. I Gede Arie Mahendra Putra, S.TP., M.TP., IPM., ASEAN Eng., a lecturer at the Food Technology Study Program, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Udayana University. He was accompanied by Dr. Ir. Luh Putu Wrasiati, M.P. from the Agricultural Industrial Technology Study Program, and A.A. Gde Agung Nanda Perwira, S.E., M.M., a lecturer from the Business Administration Study Program at Bali International University. Also, he involved two students Made Dita Dewi Devani from the Food Technology Study Program and Caroline Octovinarti Ina Kasi Langkeru from the Agricultural Industrial Technology Study Program, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Udayana University.
The Sari Mina Segara Group is well-known for its fish-based products such as sudang lepet (fermented fish), fish crackers, and fish floss—culinary icons of Sangsit’s coastal community. Despite this potential, the group still faces several challenges, including the lack of GMP standards in production, limited equipment, and suboptimal management and marketing systems.
“The main issues faced by our partner relate to sanitation, hygiene, and the absence of standardized production processes. In addition, the division of labor and business management systems are not yet effective. From a marketing perspective, they still rely heavily on conventional sales methods,” explained Arie Mahendra.
Through this program, the UNUD team provided intensive training and hands-on mentoring, covering GMP implementation, financial and human resource management, as well as digital marketing strategies. The approach ensures that participants not only gain theoretical knowledge but are also able to apply it directly in their daily operations. Digital transformation became one of the main focuses of the activity. The team encouraged Sari Mina Segara members to expand their market reach through e-commerce platforms and social media, reducing their dependence on traditional markets or local sales channels.
“Our goal is to help partners produce according to GMP standards, obtain legal product distribution permits (P-IRT), and manage their business more professionally. This way, their products can compete better and penetrate wider markets,” added Arie.
The activity, which combined socialization, interviews, training sessions, mentoring, monitoring, and evaluation, was part of a Community-Based Service Program funded by the Directorate of Research and Community Service, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Fiscal Year 2025).
“We hope that after this program, the Sari Mina Segara Group will truly become a resilient and competitive MSME. We also extend our gratitude to DPPM Kemdiktisaintek for their funding support, which made this initiative possible,” Arie concluded.
This initiative stands as tangible proof of the synergy between academia and local communities in strengthening regional economic independence. Through continuous mentoring and the adoption of proper industry standards, it is expected that coastal MSMEs like Sari Mina Segara will become successful examples of locally driven business transformation in Buleleng Regency.
